These races have small budgets but HUGE importance for our democracy

Friend, I've already written to you a couple of times this week about the importance of secretary of state races happening across the country this fall, but I think this week's events make perfectly clear just what is at stake this fall. Consider this: - Republicans in Congress and across the country [howled in anger]( after the FBI raid on Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate. - House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy threatened [political retribution]( against the Department of Justice for daring to hold Trump accountable to the law. - Far-right militants made [threats of violence]( and promised civil war as right-wing media outlets promoted [viciously antisemitic]( propaganda about the judge who signed the warrant. - One man [took action on those threats](, attempting to breach an FBI office in Cincinnati before being killed in a shootout with police. - Republicans continued to defend Trump [even after it was revealed]( that these documents contained information about nuclear secrets. Now imagine what these same Republicans would do if they had control of the election process and Trump questioned the legitimacy of the 2024 election. This isn't entirely hypothetical—this is a real possibility, as one of the Republicans who shrugged off this week's shocking revelations was the Republican candidate for Michigan secretary of state, [who shared a post]( declaring that Trump had in fact won in 2020 and would be back in the White House before the end of this year. Mark Finchem, a Trump endorsee, won the Republican primary for secretary of state—a crucial post in a state that President Biden carried by just over 10,000 votes out of more than 3 million cast. Trump's endorsement here isn't a coincidence. One of the most terrifying aspects of Trump's attempt to steal the 2020 election is also one of the most underreported: He's learned from his mistakes. Trump and his allies have been pushing far-right election deniers in key races this year to seize control of the very infrastructure of our democracy, and Fichem is just the latest to make it through his primary. To put it simply: Trump knows where he went wrong trying to steal the 2020 election and he's working to get people like Mark Finchem in office so he can steal the election in 2024—this time, successfully.
