Friend, those seven sentences are what kicked off Daily Kos 20 years ago. At the time, Markos Moulitsas, aka Kos, was a frustrated veteran and attorney writing in response to the policies of the George W. Bush administration. He had no idea that those few words he sent out into the ether would resonate with so many other people that were also looking for a space where they could share their stories and connect with other progressive folks across the country. [Daily Kos has not only survived for the past two decades, but with your help we have thrived. We rely on thousands of readers and activists from the Daily Kos community giving just a few dollars at a time. This has not only helped us meet our needs, but allowed us to grow. That's why I am asking if you can make a donation of $5 today to help us thrive and grow for decades to come.]( [DONATE]( A lot has happened during those 20 years, but through it all the Daily Kos community has been a catalyst for historic change. For those of you old enough to remember, you will recall that grassroots activism in support of Democrats and progressivism was not really a thing in early 2002. It was only blogs like Daily Kos, organizations like MoveOn, campaigns like Howard Dean's, and protests against the war in Iraq in the early 00s that really got it going. Now, it is an essential part of the American political scene. In all the major political fights of the past 20 years, grassroots progressives have played a crucial role, with millions of small donations, phone calls to elected officials, unlikely voter contacts, and event RSVPs. Imagine the fight to pass–and protect–the Affordable Care Act without any grassroots progressives contacting their elected officials. Imagine the successful presidential campaigns of 2008, 2012 and 2020, and the midterm elections of 2006 and 2018, without small donors and GOTV volunteers. Imagine no significant protests against Supreme Court outrages, family separation at the border, attempts to weaken access to the ballot box, or proposed cuts to Social Security. That's what the country was like in 2002, but because of newly formed constituencies like the Daily Kos community, it didn't stay that way for long. Daily Kos has grown from a one-man blog to the country's largest progressive news and activism hub. Every single day, millions of people visit the site to get the latest progressive news, post their opinions, connect with the Daily Kos community and take immediate and effective actions. It’s become a core part of our nation’s progressive infrastructure. On reflection of the past 20 years, Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas said it best: “Twenty years ago, I could never have imagined how my personal blog would both transform and become a transformative agent within progressive politics. And while I’m incredibly proud of what this organization and its incredible staff have accomplished since 2002, the work we do to support progressive activism and politics has never been more essential than it is now. This anniversary is a tremendous milestone, but our nation is in a fight for its very soul, and Daily Kos continues to meet the challenges of this battle every day as we persist in our pursuit of a more progressive and equitable future.” [Our work is not over. Please support the work Daily Kos does day in and day out and for years to come, by giving $5 today.]( [DONATE]( Thanks for all you do, Amanda McKay, Daily Kos If you wish to donate by mail instead, please send a check to Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
