Research from the Union of Concerned Scientists shows that the food giant’s current practices contaminate waterways, threaten public health, and endanger its workers. And Tyson has been extremely resistant to change, even as it faces pressure from shareholders to move in a more sustainable direction. In 2018, the company trumpeted a goal to improve environmental practices on two million farm acres by 2020. Yet by June 2021, it had enrolled just 408,000 acres—less than a quarter of that commitment—into a pilot program and pushed the larger goal off to 2025. As the US’s largest meat and poultry processor, what Tyson chooses to do, and not do, has an outsized impact on the industry, with direct consequences for our communities. Together, we must push Tyson Foods to protect the land, soil, and water resources on which its business—and our health—depends.
