Friend, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is the first Black woman nominated to the Supreme Court. It comes at a time when we need her voice and perspective more than ever. That's why all U.S. Senators must hear from constituents. Civil rights, the Supreme Court, and housing policy have long been intertwinedâgoing back to 1926, when they upheld zoning laws that kept people of color out of certain neighborhoods. And just last fall, the Court overturned the CDC's federal eviction moratorium. At a time when investors are flooding the market, displacing and zoning out Black residents, and discriminating against Black tenants, a vote to confirm a Black woman to the Supreme Court is a vote to protect the housing rights of Black communities and all others. The Senate Judiciary Committee has begun confirmation hearings on Judge Jackson this week. All senators must get constituent messages in support of her confirmation now. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, now that President Biden has named his historic nomination to the Supreme Court, we need to work harder than ever before to ensure a justice with compassion and a track record for civil and human rights is on the bench. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is that candidate. As housing inflation continues to cripple lower- and middle-income families, it is imperative that our nation's highest court has a justice committed to housing rights for communities most impacted by housing inequality. Jayleen Alvarado, Daily Kos Below is an email we sent earlier calling for the confirmation of KBJ. ---------------------------------------------------------------
Friend, last September, the Supreme Court rejected President Bidenâs attempt to extend the nationwide eviction moratorium to help families cope with the financial burden from the COVID-19 pandemic. SCOTUS ruled that the CDCâs moratorium exceeded the agencyâs authority. At the time, nearly [2 million]( Americans were facing eviction risk, and the decision led to homelessness and family separation. This decision also placed disproportionate harm on Black families, who are more [likely]( to be evicted, are more likely to have lost their jobs during the pandemic, and three times as likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19. In moments like these, we needed a Black woman on the court to represent the needs of Black and brown communities. A Black woman on the Supreme Court would be more than a historic first. Some of the most influential housing legislation of our time has been ruled on by the Supreme Court. Having a Black woman on the Supreme Court would bring representation for millions of people historically targeted by discriminatory housing policies, whose livelihood time and time again relies on the decisions of Supreme Court justices. With the housing market, localities, and landlords explicitly alienating Black and brown communities, we need a Supreme Court justice who will bring further representation to communities of color, and greater protections to those facing the brunt of this housing crisis.
