Friend, as we enter the fourth week of Putin's illegal and unprovoked attack on Ukraine, Russian forces have been escalating their assault directly on the Ukrainian people. They have shelled civilian infrastructure like hospitals, theaters, malls, grocery stores and apartment buildings. [These violent and unprovoked attacks have unified people all around the world in support of innocent Ukrainians. As of this past Friday, [the UN]( estimates that 3.2 million people have fled the violence to neighboring countries and another 6.5 million have been displaced within the borders of Ukraine. They also estimate that there are another 12 million people that are trapped in the shelled areas, unable to escape because of continued violence, destroyed bridges and roads, or a lack of resources and access to information about where to safely relocate. Since the beginning of the war, Daily Kos readers and activists have raised more than $1.8 million for charities that are helping the people of Ukraine. Here's an update from some the organizations that your donations have helped to support:
- Americares: is focused on providing medicine and supplies to both people that fled the country and that remain in the country. So far, they have sent three tons of supplies to hospitals in Ukraine. The have also awarded numerous emergency grants to help address mental health needs, support the immediate needs of people arriving at bordering countries, hire Ukrainian-speaking staff to help with educational resources, and housing. - International Fund for Animal Welfare: are on the frontlines in Poland where they estimate that 80,000 refugees are coming into Poland on a daily basis, many are bringing their pets with them. Polish veterinary teams are processing 500 to 600 animals per day, and have vaccinated and microchipped over 12,000 animals since the war began. The animals have traveled many miles with their families and are often dehydrated and showing signs of hypothermia, so wet food and other items such as cat carriers, leashes and harnesses are continuously needed. They are delivering daily supplies so refugees have critically needed support for their journey onward. - World Central Kitchen: it is estimated that they have already served over one million meals in five countries. They have opened a kitchen and food supply depot in Poland, right on the border with Ukraine, and have multiple warehouses active in Lviv where trucks are filled with food to head east reaching cities like Odessa and Mykolayiv. They are also supporting more restaurants to serve meals in Ukrainian cities including Kharkiv and Kyiv, which remain under active attack. - The International Rescue Committee: they are working with partners to support evacuation efforts for women and children and provide emergency assistance to internally displaced people. This includes helping people to register as displaced as well as ensuring they have groceries, blankets, warm clothes, and stoves that work where power has been cut off. They are also providing cash so people can purchase what they need the most. IRC is also on the ground in Poland providing newly arrived refugees from Ukraine with psychosocial and legal support, cultural assistance and translation services. - Razom for Ukraine: has delivered supplies to help with civilian territorial defense in the city of Kharkiv, 40 pallets of tactical medical supplies delivered to Lviv along with fifty drones that ensure the safe delivery of medical supplies.
