--------------------------------------------------------------- Wavemaker,  Oceana just release

[Sign Oceana's petition and tell President Biden: Stop illegal fishing and seafood fraud!]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Wavemaker,  Oceana just released a new report showing that the illegal seafood trade is hurting local fishing communities around the world, demonstrating the need to expand traceability and transparency requirements for all seafood imported into the United States.    The United States is the world’s largest seafood importing country, yet around 60% of imported seafood products are not covered by the U.S. Seafood Import Monitoring Program (SIMP), which requires catch documentation and traceability requirements for some imports. Currently, the program only applies to 13 types of seafood at risk of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and seafood fraud.  Right now, the United States has the opportunity to lead in the global fight against IUU fishing. That’s why Oceana is calling on President Biden to expand SIMP to include all imported seafood and implement traceability from net to plate but we need your voice to help make it happen. The President has the tools to combat IUU fishing, he just needs to get the job done. [Sign Oceana's petition. Tell President Biden: Increase transparency and traceability of seafood >>]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( IUU fishing is a serious problem. This fishing is off the books, and can include fishing in closed areas, with prohibited fishing gear that kills marine life or destroys habitat, or for unmanaged species or in areas without any oversight. IUU fishing can even be a driver of forced labor and other human rights abuses.  Transparency at sea and traceability of seafood are essential to ensure that only seafood legally caught and sourced makes it onto our dinner plates. Millions of people around the world depend on fish for their lives and livelihoods, making IUU fishing a grave threat to fishers internationally. Accordingly, it is critical that the U.S. prevents seafood caught illegally from entering our borders to protect both domestic consumers and global fishing communities. That's why we need your voice today. [It’s time for the United States to get tough on IUU fishing. Add your name today to help make it happen >>]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( For the oceans, Diane Hoskins Campaign Director Oceana Paid for by Oceana. Does not equal endorsement.
