Friend, I am here to inform you that reports of impending Democratic doom in the 2022 midterm elections may have been greatly exaggerated. For one thingâand while this may be hard to believeâthe latest round of redistricting is going ... fairly well for Democrats. [Here is what Politico had to say on it this week](:
Catastrophic losses from partisan gerrymandering that many Democrats feared have not materialized. Despite decrying the process and pushing reform in Congress, Democrats did not unilaterally disarm. The hyper-aggressive map recently released by New York Democrats made it clear that the party may come out ahead in the process nationally. [Here's more, late last week, from the redistricting editor of the Cook Political Report:](
Redistricting update: new lines have now been adopted in 301/435 House districts. Biden won 173 of these 301 new seats, up from 167/301 under the current lines. While this language may be difficult for non-experts to parse, and while the redistricting process is not yet complete, what that passage means in simple terms is that, at least so far, a net of four congressional seats have shifted from voting for Trump to voting for Biden. Now, this does NOT mean that Democrats are going to keep control of the House of Representatives in 2022 because of redistrictingâfar from it. This means that instead of the maps we face in 2022 being even worse than the gerrymanders we faced from 2012-2020, they will likely be teeney, weeney bit better. To put it another way, given that Democrats actually won the U.S. House majority in 2018 and 2020 under even worse maps than the news ones that are currently being drawn, Republicans are not going to win the House in 2022 just by redistricting. Of course, even if Democrats are not actually doomed in 2022 because of gerrymandering, we are still going to have a difficult time retaining control of Congress both because of a bad political environment for Democrats and because of laws Republicans have passed in almost 20 states that make it more difficult for peopleâusually communities of colorâto vote. These are both real problems that cannot be dismissed. So, let's ask ourselves, what can we actually do about these problems? When it comes to the political environment, not much. Grassroots activism can't really do anything about inflation, or the supply chain, orâapart from wearing masks and getting boostedâending the pandemic. These are bigger problems than we can tackle with people power, and for several reasons we just gotta act prudently as private citizens and hope the national malaise these problems are causing lessens as the year goes on. However, there is very much something grassroots activism can do about the laws Republicans have passed making it more difficult to vote. Simply put, we can volunteer our time to help people navigate the new voter restriction laws and cast their ballots anyway, and we can volunteer our money to organizations who are working on this same problem. At Daily Kos, we have proven to be very effective at doing this, and we are only getting better. In 2016, we signed up 28,000 volunteers to help turn out the vote. In 2018, we signed up 37,000. Then, in 2020, we smashed those totals by signing up 110,000 volunteers. In 2021, an off year, we signed up nearly as many people as we did in 2016, which bodes very well for our turnout efforts this year. [We have set a high goal of signing up 100,000 volunteers to help Get Out the Vote in 2022 tools, methods and messaging that are statistically proven to be effective. This will be, by far, our biggest Get Out the Vote effort ever for a midterm election, but that is exactly what we need to cancel Republican voter suppression. This is a problem we can actually solve, but as a grassroots funded organization we need your support to make it happen. Even a one-time donation to Daily Kos can help our efforts to cancel Republican voter suppression.]( Keep fighting,

Executive Campaign Director, Daily Kos P.S. As a national organization with fewer than 100 staff who are widely dispersed throughout the country, we know that in order to effectively combat Republican voter suppression laws we can't do this by ourselves and need lots of help from partners. The best get out the vote work is always done by local activists, and so supporting the local organizations who are educating targeted voters about their rights and helping them navigate the new local anti-voter laws they face is essential in any effort to cancel Republican voter suppression.
