Friend, Florida Republicans have [advanced]( a bill that would create the first in the nation police unit to investigate and hunt down voter fraud. In response to this bill, one [voting rights activist fears]( that "this is going to be used as a tool to harass and intimidate civic engagement organizations and voters." [Trump Republicans at the state level are doing everything they can to intimidate and scare people into NOT voting. Further, given the U.S. Senate's failure to pass new voting rights protections, at this point, there isn't much that the federal government can do to stop it, either. However, we can still volunteer our personal time and small donations to support efforts that can help folks navigate these new voter suppression laws and cast their ballots anyway. That's why I am asking you to support Daily Kos' Get Out the Vote campaign as we prepare for the 2022 elections. Can you donate $5 a month to help us turn out more voters?]( [Can't give monthly? A one-time donation of $5 will still help us cancel Republican-sponsored voter suppression.]( Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis first floated the idea of creating such a law enforcement agency during his State of the State address, even though days after the 2020 elections he touted Florida's elections as the "gold standard" and even though Trump won the state by three points. According to the [bill]( (PDF), the staff of the agency would be hand-picked by the Governor and report to the Governor and the cabinet, all of whom are Republicans. This partisan-created goon squad would investigate tips that came in through a public voter fraud hotline, scare voters in targeted communities and be empowered to arrest those they deemed to be violators. Unfortunately, Florida isn't the only state eyeing such investigative crime units. Both Arizona and Georgia, which President Biden narrowly won in 2020, have floated similar legislation ideas and Texas has already created an Election Integrity Unit. Trump's constant lies and conspiracy theories about widespread voter fraud have spawned a ton of attention, both from state Republican legislators and the media. However, with all the recounts, audits, investigations and court rulings, there have only been a handful of actual fraud cases out of the over one hundred million ballots cast. It makes you think that these tactics are not actually intended to prevent voter fraud, they are instead intended to prevent people from actually voting. [Daily Kos is uniquely positioned to fight these laws at a grassroots level, educate voters on their rights, support civic engagement groups in frontline communities, and to sign up to volunteer to knock on doors, write letters to unlikely voters, and serve as poll workers. But we can't do it without the grassroots support of our readers and activists. Please support our GOTV campaign by giving $5 a month.]( [If you can't give monthly, a one-time donation of $5 will still help Daily Kos reach voters in critical states.]( Thanks for all you do, Amanda McKay, Daily Kos If you wish to donate by mail instead, please send a check to Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
