Friend, on January 15 families that had received the child tax credit every month stopped receiving it, because the Senate has yet to pass the Build Back Better Act. As a direct result, over 3 million kids are now expected to slip back into poverty. [Now is the time to get angry. Below is an email that my colleague Sarah Hogg wrote to you last week. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, [sign and send the petition to Senate Democrats: Cut child poverty. Restore and extend the child tax credit with the Build Back Better Act.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( For the past six months, 36 million households have received the child tax credit, a decades-long program that was expanded during the pandemic to include more families and larger payments. Now, for the first time since July, families with children won’t receive a check on January 15. Because the continuation of the expanded child tax credit is wrapped up in the Build Back Better Act, it expired weeks ago when Congress failed to pass the bill by the end of 2021. While legislators [debate]( over how to move forward, countless families across the United States are facing the loss of hundreds of dollars this month—all in the middle of a massive COVID surge that has left parents scrambling to work while setting up virtual school for their kids and trying to secure child care. [Sign and send the petition to Senate Democrats: Cut child poverty. Restore and extend the child tax credit with the Build Back Better Act.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( The child tax credit is more than just a check. It’s money for groceries, rent, car payments, child care, utilities like heat in the winter, or just a little bit of added security when times are tough. Leaving families in the cold—and without answers as to when they can expect payments to resume—is cruel. Personal stories are the most effective tool we have to encourage our legislators to reinstate the child tax credit. If you or someone you know has or would benefit from the child tax credit, please be sure to let your U.S. senator know how important this issue is to you.
