Friend, On December 19, in a reversal of public statements and private assurances, Sen. Joe Manchin

Friend, [sign and send a petition to House and Senate Democrats: Don't give up on Build Back Better.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( On December 19, in a reversal of public statements and private assurances, Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia went on Fox News to announce his opposition to the Build Back Better Act. In a 50-50 Senate, this all but dooms the Build Back Better Act in its current form. This is maddening, heartbreaking and deeply frustrating. However, one thing it is not is a reason to give up. Democrats can, and must, still pursue significant new investments in our social safety net in 2022. [Sign and send a petition to House and Senate Democrats: Don't give up on Build Back Better.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( For one thing, we face too many problems as a country and as a world to just throw in the towel. Climate change is still an unfolding disaster. Millions of people still need access to affordable health care, child care, and a path to citizenship. Perhaps most glaringly of all, with the lapse of the expanded child tax credit that was enacted through the Democratic COVID relief bill in March 2021, we cannot sit idly by as millions of children fall back into poverty only months after we helped lift them out of it. Further, there is actually quite a lot in Build Back Better that [Sen. Manchin apparently agrees with](. Given this, surely the reconciliation bill that is serving as the vehicle for Build Back Better can be reworked in some way that is palatable to everyone involved. Third, and finally, 2022 is perhaps the last chance for Democrats to enact big change for many years. Control of the White House and both branches of Congress is usually fleeting, as we experienced in 1993-1994 and 2009-2010. The 2021 off year elections went quite poorly for Democrats, and the party of the sitting president almost always faces significant losses in midterm elections. If we are being realistic, the next chance for Democrats to have unified control of the federal government probably won't come for at least another decade. While we have already passed some big legislation in 2021, in 2022 Democrats have to act with urgency to accomplish all they can while still they can. [Sign and send a petition to your Democratic member(s) of the U.S. House and Senate: Don't give up on Build Back Better. Keep trying to make big change happen in 2022.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( Keep fighting, Chris Bowers Executive Campaign Director, Daily Kos Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
