Friend, Last month, Majid Khan testified to a military commission in Guantánamo Bay about the atrocities he was subjected to under the US government’s post-9/11 torture program. The torture Khan described is so horrific that seven members of the military jury called for the judge to pardon him in a letter describing the US government’s torture program as on par with that “performed by the most abusive regimes in modern history.” This can never be allowed to happen again. But it could if these stories remain secret. [Sign the petition to tell President Biden to take a stand against torture and declassify a 2012 Senate report into CIA human rights abuses!]( [SIGN ON]( Khan’s trial marked the first time the US government has allowed someone who was detained and tortured at a CIA black site — one of the US’s several secret prisons during the War on Terror — to publicly testify about their treatment. You may already be familiar with stories like Khan’s and the human rights abuses perpetrated by the US government under the CIA’s “enhanced interrogation” program. Illegal abuse of detainees, and the US government’s sanctioning of such abuse, has been well-known since at least 2004. The US Senate conducted an in-depth report into the program during the Obama years. Yet that report is still partially classified, and the US government continues fighting to keep details about the torture program secret every chance it gets. As the Boston Globe Editorial Board wrote after Khan’s trial: “The only way to make sure that something like America’s torture program never happens again is by actually knowing what exactly happened.” Declassifying all the details about the CIA torture program is an important step the Biden Adminsitration can take to clearly condemn it. And, as the Globe’s Editorial Board noted, declassification could lead to prosecution of perpetrators of the most serious crimes, and could allow torture victims whose medical records have been classified to receive urgently-needed medical care they’ve been denied.
