--------------------------------------------------------------- Friend— 81% of American voters

[Sign Oceana's petition to tell your U.S. Representative: Increase transparency and traceability of seafood to protect American fishers, businesses, consumers, and the oceans >>]( [SIGN NOW]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend— 81% of American voters support policies to ensure all seafood in the U.S. is legally caught and not a product of human rights abuses according to a poll commissioned by Oceana. The results are clear. No one wants to:   - be cheated, - undermine fishers who play by the rules, - inadvertently support human trafficking and forced labor, - risk the health of our oceans. Millions of people around the world depend on seafood for their lives and livelihoods, making it critical that we manage fisheries responsibly. Transparency at sea and traceability of seafood are essential to ensure that only safe, legally caught, responsibly sourced, and honestly labeled seafood makes it onto our dinner plates. That's why we're asking for your help, Friend. Your members of Congress need to hear from you. [Sign to tell your U.S. Representative: Increase transparency and traceability of seafood to protect American fishers, businesses, consumers, and the oceans >>]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( In 2019, the United States imported an estimated $2.4 billion worth of seafood derived from illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. IUU fishing is off the books and can include fishing in closed areas, fishing unmanaged species in unmanaged regions, or fishing with prohibited fishing gear that kills marine life or destroys habitat. It can even be a driver of forced labor and other human rights abuses. But right now, we have an opportunity to make the U.S. a leader in this fight by ensuring that our market is closed to illegally sourced seafood. The Illegal Fishing and Forced Labor Prevention Act offers a promising pathway to combat IUU fishing, which threatens the future of our oceans and those who depend on them. If passed, it would: - Allow the U.S. to take stronger action against countries that fail to address IUU fishing and human rights abuses in the seafood sector and ensure that American dollars are not supporting illegal fishing, forced labor, and other human rights abuses. - Require that all seafood imports provide catch documentation demonstrating that they were legally caught or farmed. - Provide consumers with more information about the seafood they eat, require fish to be tracked from boat to plate, increase vessel transparency, and protect workers and those that rely on a healthy ocean. This is progress that we need and that 8 in 10 American voters want — but we need your help to make it happen, friend. [Your elected officials answer to you!
