Friend, we don't know yet what ultimately stays or goes in the Build Back Better Act—but it's outrageous that communities are asked to compete for crumbs. And with comprehensive immigration reform having been stalled in Congress for decades, this massive budget reconciliation bill is our best opportunity to finally make progress. [Sign and send the petition to your House and Senate Democrats: Citizenship can't wait. We need a path to citizenship in the Build Back Better Act.]( [Sign and send the petition]( Former Senate Leader Harry Reid [warned Democrats]( this week about leaving it out of the bill: "Democrats can fight and win on immigration. It makes policy and political sense and not just with Latino voters, with Americans of all backgrounds. Americans want legal status for immigrants who have worked hard, paid taxes and made their lives in the United States." The Senate parliamentarian's opinion is merely advisory, and can be overruled by a majority vote. What matters right now is that millions of immigrants have waited for decades to come out of the shadows, and be productive citizens without the constant fear of deportation. And with Republicans opposed, getting it passed in the Build Back Better Act is essential. 48 out of 50 Senate Democrats (and a similar percentage in the House) support Build Back Better in its current form. In order to get the few holdout votes necessary, we cannot pit our communities against each other and compromise our crucial values. We must deliver.
