In 2021, billionaires could pay for a joyride into space while American families face the stinging realities of an economy not built for them and an international health crisis not seen since a century ago. While hard-working American families pay an average of 14% income tax each year, Bezos and the other billionaires should be required to pay their fair share. The real innovation we need is a fair tax system that would allow desperately needed investments into well-paying jobs, adequate care for our children, and efforts to save the planet we all live on from the climate crisis. Increasing taxes on the wealthiest individuals and big corporations could fund child care, and lift American families out of poverty. This country will never achieve a fair and equitable recovery from COVID-19 if we continue to have a system where corporations and the wealthy get richer while everyone else is left behind.
