Who is sentenced to death is arbitrarily decided, racially-biased, and rife with poor lawyering and junk science. Black people are [routinely]( put to death for offenses for which white people received lesser punishments, and are less likely to have their death sentence convictions reviewed by higher courts than were their white counterparts. To make matters worse, too often innocent people are convicted and sentenced — at least 185 people across the U.S. have been exonerated since 1973.
