Friend, while running for president, Joe Biden [pledged]( to end the death penalty at the federal level, and incentivize states to do the same. Now as president, he can make good on his pledge. At any time during his tenure, he can issue an executive order commuting all federal death sentences. [Add your name: We can't reverse the execution of an innocent person. Urge President Biden to commute the sentences of people on federal death row.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Capital punishment is a barbaric, indefensible practice. It is largely [wielded]( by a small set of prosecutors against people who are [poor](, [mentally ill](, or have long [suffered]( from abuse, neglect, and trauma. Who is sentenced to death is arbitrarily decided, racially-biased, and rife with poor lawyering and junk science. Black people are [routinely]( put to death for offenses for which white people received lesser punishments, and are less likely to have their death sentence convictions reviewed by higher courts than were their white counterparts. To make matters worse, too often innocent people are convicted and sentenced — at least 185 people across the U.S. have been exonerated since 1973. As Biden [tweeted]( “Because we can’t ensure that we get these cases right every time, we must eliminate the death penalty.” [Now is the time to end this horrific practice. Our partners in justice will deliver petition signatures to President Biden and the Justice Department later this month. Add your name today: President Biden, please commute the sentences of people on federal death row.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Keep fighting, Monique Teal, Daily Kos The petition is in collaboration with The Innocence Project, Equal Justice USA, 8th Amendment Project, Witness to Innocence, ACLU, The Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, and Death Penalty Focus.
