And so many students – particularly low-income students and students of color – are being left behind without access to the world-class education they deserve. Our government is failing too many families and I'm running for Governor to change that. I’ve spent my entire life fighting for civil rights and working people, and I want to use that experience to build a Maryland that works for everyone. I know the value of hard work and how to win the toughest fights. After law school, I didn’t want to bill hours – I wanted to help people. I started out as a civil rights prosecutor at the Department of Justice where I took on racism and police brutality, and served on the Montgomery County Council. Then, after two years as Maryland’s Secretary of Labor, I got to work rebuilding the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice and joined President Obama’s cabinet as Secretary of Labor to fight for workers. Growing up, I could never have imagined that the President would give me such an opportunity to help people, or that I’d be running for Governor. I’m here because it's never been about me.
