Friend, Congress is back to finalize the Build Back Better Act. We can pass historic legislation that fights climate change, expands health care, offers a path to citizenship, extends education and pays child care and elder care workers a living wage. But only if we stand firm and demand the rich and corporations pay their fair share in taxes. [Sign and send the petition to your House and Senate Democrats: A historic Build Back Better Act requires making the rich and corporations pay their fair share.]( [Sign and send the petition]( Already, some Democrats who get lots of money from corporate interests are doing what they can to derail this historic legislation. We must remind them they represent us, not the rich. Three House Democrats (Scott Peters, Kurt Schrader and Kathleen Rice) [voted down]( a proposal last week to allow Medicare to negotiate with drug companies. Practically no one is against this except the pharmaceutical industry, who has unduly profited from it for years. Seven House Democrats from Texas—Henry Cuellar, Vicente Gonzalez, Lizzie Fletcher, Sylvia Garcia, Marc Veasey, Filemon Vela and Colin Allred—[wrote a letter]( to House leadership, complaining the Build Back Better Act unfairly "targets" the oil and gas industry. We cannot afford any defections if this bill is going to deliver for the American people. Literally everything is at stake: health care, education, climate, a path to citizenship. Now that the House committees have drafted tax elements of the proposal, it's time to turn up the heat. [Sign and send the petition: The rich and corporations have had it unfairly good for too long. We must tax the rich and corporations to pay for the Build Back Better Act.]( [Sign and send the petition]( Keep fighting, Paul Hogarth, Daily Kos P.S. Here is an email we sent you about this last week. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, when the rich and corporations have made a lot of money they don't want to give it back. And that's what we are seeing right now in Congress. [Sign and send the petition to your House and Senate Democrats: A historic Build Back Better Act requires making the rich and corporations pay their fair share.]( [Sign and send the petition]( Right now, the House Ways & Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee are meeting to finalize what tax policies will help pay for the Build Back Better Act. And if the corporate [lobbying blitz]( underway manages to pare back these modest tax increases, that means less money to fight climate change, expand health care, or cut child poverty. As President Biden's chief of staff [pointed out](, the rich have done extremely well during the COVID pandemic and 55 big corporations have paid nothing in taxes. So when corporate lobbyists try to scale back against tax elements of the Build Back Better Act, they are defending an unjust and corrupt system. And if some Democrats argue in committee that a particular tax increase should be removed from the bill, they are doing their bidding. What does the Build Back Better Act do, and why is it so important that it be fully funded? Here are just six things it would do if we can keep the funding to pay for it all. - Free preschool and two years of tuition-free community college - Cut child poverty in half by making the child tax credit permanent - Serious investments in fighting climate change, including a Civilian Climate Corps that will enlist young people in jobs to rebuild our infrastructure and save the environment - Pay our child and elder care workers a living wage, the human infrastructure we need to really get our country moving again - Expand Medicare to include dental, vision, and hearing - A path to citizenship that has been stalled for decades by Washington politicians [The rich and corporations have had it good for way too long, and they don't want to pay more. Their lobbyists are just sweetening the deal for them. Sign and send the petition to your House and Senate Democrats: TAX THE RICH NOW.]( [Sign and send the petition]( Keep fighting, Paul Hogarth, Daily Kos Daily Kos Relies on Readers Like You We don't have billionaire backers like some right-wing media outlets.
