The Freedom to Vote Act has been introduced, a revised piece of legislation that upholds most of the key pillars of the For the People Act and is the first voting rights bill introduced this year that has the support of the entire Democratic caucus -- all 50 Democratic senators. That unity, unfortunately, will not inspire bipartisan support from Republican senators. The GOP will do everything they can to block what they know is a bill that will overturn their party’s state-level disenfranchisement efforts and will continue to abuse a Jim Crow era rule, the filibuster, to do just that. Meanwhile, Republicans in state legislatures across the country are passing draconian voter suppression laws to stop people from voting—and gerrymandering districts for the next 10 years. If left unscathed, the 2022 midterm elections (and beyond) will not be fair. We’re running out of time. We must ensure the Senate responds to the voting rights crisis before it’s too late, and that will require eliminating the filibuster immediately.
