Friend, [sign the petition to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: Congress must address Texas’ abortion emergency. Bring the House back from recess now.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( On September 1, 2021, the Supreme Court silently allowed a six-week abortion ban to go into effect in Texas. 24 hours later, the Court announced a [5-4 vote]( refusing to block the ban. It is no exaggeration to say that we are in a full-blown emergency. The Supreme Court effectively overturned Roe v. Wade in Texas in the middle of the night with no oral arguments and an unsigned opinion. With a [15-week abortion ban]( that could topple Roe and Planned Parenthood v. Casey on the Supreme Court docket later this year, the Court’s refusal to halt a blatantly unconstitutional law spells danger for the future of abortion access. [This is the most devastating blow to abortion rights in decades. Sign now: Congress must take every action possible to defend abortion access.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( The Supreme Court’s decision is unconscionable, but it would also be unconscionable for our elected leaders to sit back and do nothing. Democrats must do [anything and everything]( in their power to enact protections for people seeking abortion in Texas and across the country. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi [announced]( that the House will vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act, legislation that would guarantee the right to an abortion, as soon as they return from recess. But when is that? September 20. Taking action nearly three weeks after the most extreme threat to abortion in decades is wholly unacceptable. It wouldn’t be too much of a lift to bring the House back early—as it happens, many members are in D.C. right now working on portions of the Build Back Better Act in committee. We have a number of tools at our disposal, but we don’t have time. With each passing day, more and more people lose access to care. Speaker Pelosi must act. [Click here to AUTOMATICALLY sign the petition calling on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to bring the House back from recess immediately. We are in a full-blown crisis for abortion rights.]( [AUTOMATICALLY SIGN THE PETITION]( Our message to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: We don’t have any time to wait. You must bring the House of Representatives back into session immediately and act to ensure protections for pregnant people seeking abortion care in Texas.
