Friend, the most restrictive abortion law in the country took effect this week. The ultra-right-wing leaning [U.S. Supreme Court in a 5-4 vote]( allowed the law to come into effect. Effectively, the Supreme Court allowed Roe v. Wade, the precedent for nearly fifty years, to fall in the state of Texas with rippling implications for states. This new law is horrifying in so many ways. It effectively bans abortions at six weeks, before most even realize they are pregnant, and encourages anti-abortion vigilantes to become bounty hunters. Private citizens can sue those that help someone obtain an abortion after six weeks -- including doctors who provide care, counselors and clergy members, family, friends or even rideshare drivers. [Daily Kos has a long history of fighting for reproductive freedom and we are not deterred by this dystopian law -- we will continue fighting every day. Please support our work by starting a monthly donation of $5.]( [Can't give monthly? A one-time donation of $5 will still support our work.]( Daily Kos isn't giving this fight up anytime soon. Not only are we working to educate people about this new law through the stories on our website, but we are standing our ground with numerous actions: - We need to make our voices heard in the halls of Congress and encourage our lawmakers to pass the [Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA]() which guarantees a pregnant person's right to access abortion — and the right of an abortion provider to deliver these abortion services — free from medically unnecessary restrictions that interfere with a patient's individual choice or the provider-patient relationship. It would prevent local governments from enacting discriminatory, unjust, and illogical legislation to restrict rights to abortion services. - The U.S. Supreme Court allowed Roe v. Wade to fall in the state of Texas. [We must expand the Supreme Court.]( One of the reasons we’re here is Donald Trump’s appointment of three ultra-right-wing justices to the Court. Adding seats to the Supreme Court is the only practical, proportional response to the dangerous rise of extremism on the bench and the only way to restore its balance and integrity. - Daily Kos has supported abortion funds that help people seeking abortions with transportation, childcare, housing and some many other necessities. These funds have become extremely vulnerable to these lawsuits. We have raised $238,964 for funds both within the state of [Texas]( and [neighboring states]( that will see an influx of people seeking care. [I'm not going to lie, this fight is going to get pretty hard as Republican-controlled states look to implement similar laws. But Daily Kos is not backing down from the fight to protect our reproductive freedom. Please support our work by donating $5 a month.]( [Can't give monthly? A one-time donation of $5 will still support our work.]( Keep fighting, Amanda McKay, Daily Kos If you wish to donate by mail instead, please send a check to Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
