Friend, today, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on whether to establish a commission to investigate the January 6 attack on our Capitol. Thanks to pro-democracy advocates like you, it looks like a number of House Republicans are ready to join Democrats in voting for the commission. However, Republican House leadership is now [actively]( whipping votes to defeat the bill. The vote is expected today, so we have no time to waste. Please take two minutes to call your member of Congress and urge them to vote in favor of the commission. Call Representative Carolyn Maloney at (202) 225-7944. When you reach an aide, here is a sample message: Hello, my name is (say your name) calling from zip code 10016 in New York. Congress must establish an independent commission with subpoena power to fully investigate the events on January 6 and the causes of the insurrection, and to take steps to make sure this never happens again. Thank you for your time. [Once you have made a phone call, please click this link. Read more about why the commission is important below. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, the House is [scheduled]( to vote this week — as soon as Wednesday — on the deal struck by Democratic Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson and Republican ranking committee member John Katko for a January 6 commission. Structured much like the 9/11 Commission, the bipartisan committee would investigate the insurrectionist attack on the Capitol. It would make recommendations to help prevent future attacks on democratic institutions and provide a clear account of the events and run-up to January 6 — with a focus on why Donald Trump supporters violently attacked the Capitol. Call Representative Carolyn Maloney at (202) 225-7944. When you reach an aide, here is a sample message: Hello, my name is (say your name) calling from zip code 10016 in New York. McCarthy — who's done nothing but promote Trump's Big Lie in recent months — would likely be called by the commission to testify, possibly forcing him to expose Trump's role. We can't allow his fealty and cowardice to derail this commission and leave our country at risk for another assault. Our fragile democracy has persevered, largely thanks to the millions of us who loudly condemned the attack on our nation. As we witnessed, most Americans want all those responsible for the attack on our country to be held to account. But Republicans in Congress and Trump's most fervent supporters are still [pushing]( a false, revisionist account of the assault. These falsehoods make us vulnerable. Congress must protect our democracy. Call Representative Carolyn Maloney at (202) 225-7944.
