Friend, [sign the petition: Denounce Republicans for attempting to delay Biden nominees with racist tactics](. [SIGN THE PETITION]( On March 9, nominee for Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta had her confirmation hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee. During the hearing, Gupta demonstrated why she is more than qualified to lead the Justice Department as its third highest official. With each answer, she showed how she would bring her lifelong commitment to civil rights and racial justice to the DOJ. Despite her readiness for the role and her direct responses to senators’ questions, all Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee sent a letter to committee Chair Dick Durbin demanding a second hearing. Let’s be perfectly clear. This is racism and sexism, not a true inquiry into Vanita Gupta’s qualifications, competency, or willingness to bring integrity back to the DOJ, all of which were made explicit at the hearing. [Sign if you agree: Republicans cannot be allowed to undermine any nomination using racist and sexist tactics.]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( During the March 9 hearing, Republican senators repeatedly and doggedly badgered Gupta, presenting a stark contrast to their questioning of Lisa Monaco, nominee for Deputy Attorney General, who is white. They asked Gupta three times as many questions as Monaco, interrupted her at least 15 times, and classified her positions as “radical,” “strident,” and “salacious,” terms often used to denigrate and degrade Black and brown women. Thankfully, Republicans [didn’t get]( their second hearing. On March 25, Gupta received a party-line vote of 11-11 in committee—but only after Republicans tried to run out the clock on the hearing in another obstructionist tactic. Now, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer must “discharge” the nomination because of the tie before her nomination can be voted on in the full Senate. Even though Republicans didn’t get their way, calling for a second hearing in any regard sets a dangerous precedent for future nominees, particularly Black and brown women deeply committed to civil rights and racial justice. We cannot allow extremists to obstruct excellent nominees. This stops now.
