Friend, the filibuster is a "Jim Crow relic" and it needs to go. You don't need to take my word for it. That's what [President Obama]( calls it. The filibuster isn't written into the Constitution. It is a parliamentary procedure used to block a measure from being brought to a vote. It was used widely in the 1950s and 1960s by segregationist senators to block multiple civil rights laws. Now, Republicans are prepared to use it to stop the most sweeping voting rights bill since the Civil Rights era from being passed. Republicans know they can't win elections without voter suppression—they literally said as much [in front of the Supreme Court]( last week. Now, Republican state legislators are cooking up outrageous new plans to disenfranchise voters—especially people of color—[especially]( in states Joe Biden only narrowly carried last year. This makes passing a new voting rights act absolutely essential for the health of our democracy, and we can't do that without filibuster reform. Thankfully, Daily Kos has some experience in doing just that. Our work to reform the filibuster in the 2000s and 2010s was [widely credited]( with helping lead to then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's successful filibuster reform in 2013. We did it once, and we can do it again with your help. [If we are going to pass any meaningful legislation we must first eliminate the filibuster. With a simple majority, Democrats have the power to eliminate the filibuster as we know it, but we need all 50 Democratic Senators unified behind the change; which is why we are organizing the Daily Kos community to take real action. Support our work to create real progressive change by donating $5 now.]( [Increase your impact by becoming a monthly donor. The U.S. House of Representatives has already passed numerous progressive bills, like the PRO Act, which is the most significant worker empowerment legislation since the Great Depression, and the Equality Act, which would protect Americans against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
