--------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, The death penalty is a parti

[Add your name and join MoveOn: The federal government should not be using the inhumane punishment of the death penalty against anyone.]( [SIGN ON]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, The death penalty is a particularly cruel and inhumane way to punish members of American society. The state should not be able to decide whether a person lives or dies, especially when the American criminal justice system is rife with racism, classism, ableism, etc. In a society where Black people and poor people are criminalized for their very existence, the state should not be able to wield the power of deciding on a person’s life. The most recent execution of Brandon Bernard on December 10, 2020, was met with public outcry by activists and political figures. Even previous jurors for his case demanded that Brandon’s death sentence be commuted. The federal government ignored any attempts to save Brandon’s life and gave him a lethal injection. It is devastating that another life has been lost due to continued inequities in our criminal justice system. [Sign MoveOn’s petition and urge Congress and the Senate to abolish the death penalty immediately.]( [SIGN ON]( There are four more people slated to be executed during the rest of Trump’s lame-duck presidency. One of these people is Lisa Montgomery, a mentally disabled woman who was a victim of sexual abuse, domestic violence, and incest. What Lisa needed was consistent psychiatric and physical care, and instead, the state is planning to execute her. The system failed her in her upbringing and is now continuing to fail her by allowing her to be executed by the federal government. The death penalty in the U.S. exists within a context of systemic inequity. Not only that, the death penalty is a particularly cruel and inhumane way to treat people who need systemic support and the possibility of rehabilitation. The use of the death penalty is a vile abuse of power and should immediately be abolished. [This is why we are asking you to sign MoveOn’s petition urging Congress and the Senate to abolish the death penalty immediately.
