Friend, this is an unusual time, and so this email is going to make an unusual ask of you. News media outlets are shrinking at an alarming rate. Thousands of people have lost their jobs this year—and not just because of the pandemic. For years now, news outlets have been shrinking at an ever-increasing pace because ad dollars that once supported publishing and journalism are now being gobbled up by tech giants Facebook and Google. The pandemic simply accelerated this long-term trend. These job losses mean there are fewer journalists, copywriters, fact-checkers, and editors at exactly the time when we need more of these jobs to debunk the conspiracy theories pushed by the right-wing over Facebook and conservative media. Fortunately, in a year when many, many outlets laid off staff, forced furloughs, or cut salaries or benefits (or all of the above), Daily Kos made it through unscathed. We only managed it because of you. Small contributions from readers like you are our greatest source of income, friend. We usually see a huge number of these contributions this time of year, but we don't have time to raise money for ourselves. We need to take this time to focus on winning the Georgia runoff elections and delivering a Democratic Senate to support Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. [So I'm asking you chip in $5 to Daily Kos right now if you have not done so already. Once we hit our fundraising goal for ourselves we will turn our attention 100% toward Georgia to finally put an end to Mitch McConnell's reign over the Senate.]( In solidarity, Chris Bowers, Daily Kos --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, as senior campaign director here at Daily Kos, I oversee all the contributions that come from readers like you. Your support is our biggest source of revenue. We literally couldn't do what we do without you. But I don't want to have to ask you for money anymore. Here's why: A pair of runoff elections just after New Years will determine control of the Senate and, with it, the future of the Democratic agenda in the Biden era. Everyone here at Daily Kos wants to be focused like a laser on winning these runoff elections in the weeks ahead. Historically, though, December has been one of the biggest months of the year for us in drawing support from our readers. We had planned for that level of support again this year, but we need to spend this time focused on winning in Georgia. So, I have a different sort of thing I'm asking you today: If we raise $150,000 off this email then we can close the books on 2020 and we won't send another fundraising email for ourselves for the rest of the year. All our fundraising efforts for the rest of the year will be directed at our endorsed candidates in Georgia and local groups on the ground working to win in Georgia. [Friend, we've never made an ask like this before, but this is a moment unlike any other. That's why I'm asking you to please chip in $5, $10, or whatever you can right now.]( Thank you, Michael Langenmayr, Daily Kos If you wish to donate by mail instead, please send a check to Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
