Friend, climate change is one of the most deadly threats people across the country and world face. With the extraction of natural resources from stolen Indigenous land for profit and war came more intense and extreme weather. These are undeniable facts. Yet, Trump’s pick to the Supreme Court, Amy Coney Barrett, [believes]( climate science is a “very contentious matter of public debate." There is no debate. The climate crisis is in full bloom. If Amy Coney Barrett is confirmed to the Supreme Court, the results would be catastrophic for the climate movement and more critically, frontline communities whose homes have already or are in the process of disappearing due to exacerbated climate change. Barrett and a conservative Supreme Court could gut the EPA of its power to regulate carbon dioxide as a pollutant. Lindsey Graham and Republican Senate Judiciary Committee members just cast the first vote in support of Amy Coney Barrett and she could be confirmed as soon as next week. We cannot let Republicans’ nominations sham destroy decades of progress protecting our climate. Our lives are on the line. We urgently need you, Friend, to make calls to your senators demanding they reject Barrett to the Supreme Court. Call Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand at (202) 224-4451 and Senator Charles E. Schumer at (202) 224-6542. Here is a sample message you can use when you reach an aide: Hello, my name is Friend calling from New York. I am calling to urge you to BLOCK Judge Barrett's fast tracked nomination to the Court. She is unfit to sit on the highest bench because she denies clear evidence of climate change. Our country has come a long way -- we cannot allow her to undo decades of environmental progress. Thank you. [Once you have made a phone call, please click this link. That same week, I was trapped in my car for HOURS in Maryland and watched another driver get rescued from their nearly-submerged car by emergency workers due to record-level flooding. The climate crisis is unfolding around us. Our federal lawmakers must have stories like mine in mind. If Barrett is confirmed, a 6-3 conservative Supreme Court could dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency, stripping them of their power to regulate carbon dioxide as a pollutant if they overturn the landmark decision in Massachusetts v. EPA. Barrett could side with fossil fuel companies like BP Oil, Shell, and Exxon, which specifically have known about the dangers of fossil fuels to our climate for 40 years. Our country has come a long way: we are holding climate crisis profiteers accountable for exacerbating climate change and pushing for bold solutions that center frontline communities and collective resilience in the Green New Deal. We cannot allow a conservative Supreme Court undo decades of progress. The Supreme Court is supposed to protect our constitutional rights and ensure our elected officials don’t lead our country astray. It is impossible for Amy Coney Barrett to do that. So, we must make calls and write to our senators to ensure they reject her nomination and wait until after a new president is inaugurated to confirm a ninth SCOTUS justice. Call Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand at (202) 224-4451 and Senator Charles E. Schumer at (202) 224-6542. Here is a sample message you can use when you reach an aide: Hello, my name is Friend calling from New York.
