Friend, Amy Coney Barrett's relationship with an [anti-LGBTQ hate group]( and her outright antagonism toward the Obergefell v. Hodges decision (which legalized same-sex marriage) are just a couple neon signs that she will rubber stamp the right's assault on queer and trans rights. The day after Trump was elected my roommate at the time, a Black transgender man, felt afraid to leave our queer-friendly neighborhood, and head downtown to his job. He was scared for his own safety, and what a President Trump could mean for his already minimal protection from discrimination. I vividly remember sitting with him until his hands stopped shaking, and promising to check in later throughout the day. My roommate's worst fears quickly became reality. Trump [attacked]( housing and shelter, medical care, Title IX protections, military service, political asylum, and so much more for trans people. Now Senate Republicans are forcing a conservative supermajority on the Court to uphold this unconstitutional anti-LGBTQ agenda. Barrett could be confirmed as soon as MONDAY, Friend. I know you've been making lots of calls, but it's urgent that you KEEP putting pressure on the Senate to block this nomination. Call Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand at (202) 224-4451 and Senator Charles E. Schumer at (202) 224-6542. Here is a sample message you can use when you reach an aide: Hello, my name is SAY YOUR LAST NAME calling from 10016 in New York. I am calling to urge you to BLOCK Judge Barrett's fast tracked nomination to the Court. Millions of Americans have already voted in this year's election, many of them LGBTQ people whose rights may soon be before the Supreme Court again. It's only right that the people decide who should fill Ginsburg's seat on the Court. Thank you [Once you have made a phone call, please click this link. BLOCK Barrett's confirmation to the Supreme Court.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( As I learned more about Barrett's record and saw the breakneck speed at which Senate Republicans are moving to confirm her, a sense of dread washed over me. My partner and I wondered if we needed to get married ASAP. I wondered if the children we've talked about having will be legally recognized as mine, or if I'll always be able to carry her on my insurance. I figured our union was safe in our home state, but what if we ever moved? I thought of so many of my friends and chosen family making those same calculations, and I got pissed. My entire adult life, legislatures and courts have been deciding if I can legally secure my family the same as everyone else, and I thought that had finally been decided. Barrett, parading her loving, non-traditional family will most certainly try to rob me of mine. The Supreme Court's fundamental function is to ensure equal protection under the law, not to spit in the face of protocol and precedent to gleefully deny the rights of American people. Please call your U.S. senators right now, and remind them of their duty. Call Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand at (202) 224-4451 and Senator Charles E. Schumer at (202) 224-6542.
