Friend, in March 1965, then 25-year-old activist John Lewis marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. He and hundreds of others faced brutal attacks by state troopers in a united protest for voting rights. Recently, we lost Congressman John Lewis. As a member of the Georgia congressional delegation, he took the fight for racial justice into the halls of Congress and never failed to remind us of our moral obligation to one another. Unfortunately, Congressman Lewis's work is unfinished. Just as he and so many others experienced, our civil rights movement is also being met with violent repression, voter suppression, intimidation, and institutional barriers. However, his legacy of enduring hope remains strong. [That's why Daily Kos has teamed up with civic engagement organizations in Georgia who are building on Congressman Lewis's work. Please contribute $1 to each group to help them register, educate, count, protect, empower, and mobilize frontline communities.]( Asian American Advocacy Fund advocates for the civil and human rights of Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians in Georgia, through a combination of supporting strong candidates and policy advocacy at local, state, and federal levels. Black Voters Matter Fund seeks to increase power in our communities by increasing voter registration and turnout, advocating for policies that expand voting rights, helping build capacity and infrastructure for other organizations. Fair Fight Action promotes fair elections in Georgia and around the country, encourages voter participation, and educates voters about elections and their voting rights. Fair Fight advocates for election reform at all levels. GALEO Impact Fund strives for a better Georgia where the Latino community is engaged civically and its contributions and concerns are recognized. Georgia Equality advances fairness, safety and opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, by passing pro-equality legislation, electing fair-minded elected officials, and voter registration. My Vote Matters works to increase political education in Black communities, in response to the pressing issues of economic and racial justice. My Vote Matters also seeks to build Black political power by increasing voter turnout, particularly in Fulton County where voter turnout is crucial. New Georgia Project is a nonpartisan effort to register and civically engage Georgians. NGP's goal is to register all eligible, unregistered citizens of color in Georgia by the end of the decade. [The Voting Rights Act was a transformational victory. When the Supreme Court gutted it in 2013, they left frontline communities vulnerable to craven politicians like Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. With the election less than 100 days away, we have to work harder than ever to make our voices heard. Please contribute $1 to each organization to help them continue building on Congressman Lewis's work.]( Keep up the "good trouble", Monique Teal, Daily Kos Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
