Friend, in 2019, digital media companies were hit hard as Big Tech continued to suck up an ever-increasing share of online advertising revenue. [Last year alone, 7,800 media jobs were lost](. However, that was just a small tremor compared to the economic earthquake of the COVID-19 pandemic, where [36,000 media jobs were lost just from March 15 to May 1](. Fortunately, through it all Daily Kos has continued to operate at full capacity without furloughs, layoffs or paycuts. That's because of you, Friend, and the millions of other readers and activists that make up the Daily Kos community. We turned to you for support, and you stepped up big. Now, small donations from our audience of readers and activists are our largest source of revenue. As Chris mentioned in his email below, there is nothing else like Daily Kos. We are a grassroots funded, participatory community for progressive news you can do something about. Over the past 18 years Daily Kos has grown to become the largest progressive community on the internet -- not just the largest progressive digital media company, but also a progressive powerhouse for taking effective action that creates real change. [Daily Kos is not immune to the difficulties that other media companies have faced, and the future remains uncertain for us, too. We have relied more and more on our readers and activists to support the work Daily Kos does every day; now making up half of our revenue. That's why I am asking you to support our continued work by giving $5 a month.]( [Can't give monthly? A one-time donation will still help us keep fighting. Please click here to give $5.]( Thank you for all you do, Amanda McKay, Daily Kos --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, there is nowhere else like Daily Kos, anywhere. Period. Full stop. Think I'm exaggerating? Consider: - Accountable to you, not corporate interests: The primary source of revenue for most media outlets is advertising. However, at Daily Kos, our largest source of income are small donations from our community of readers and activists. This makes us accountable to you, not corporate interests. - News you can do something about: Instead of promoting false balance, we take sides. In fact, we even go beyond having a clear editorial slant. At Daily Kos, we directly connect you with grassroots actions you can take on the news you are reading: contacting your elected officials, fundraising, Getting Out the Vote (GOTV), and connecting you with allied advocacy organizations. - A community you can participate in: We give our community a real voice. This means not only letting readers post comments, but giving them the ability to publish their own articles--even to help curate which articles, whether community or staff written, appear high up on the front page of our website for an extended period of time. Accountable to the grassroots. News you can do something about. A conversation you can help shape. There really is nothing else like Daily Kos. What's more, if Daily Kos were to disappear tomorrow, there never will be anything like Daily Kos ever again. Social media sites owned by Big Tech are destroying the news industry. In 2019, before the pandemic and during a relatively good time for the national economy, [the news industry lost 7,800 jobs](. Now, the pandemic has blasted that trend into overdrive, with [36,000 more jobs lost at news media companies]( as of May 1, 2020. This is a news [media extinction event](. In this environment, there will be no launch of new, successful, news media companies. The only question is which existing news outlets survive. [There is nothing else like Daily Kos, and there never will be again. Support from our grassroots community has kept us going at full strength while so many others have faced layoffs, pay cuts and furloughs. However, during these difficult times, we are facing real uncertainty, just like every other media organization out there. Please, help us continue to bring you the news and give you the tools to take immediate action by making a monthly contribution of $5.]( [Can't give monthly?
