As the COVID-19 crisis persists, a staggering number of workers are still losing their jobs. In just the week ending on April 18, [4.4 million]( people filed unemployment claims, bringing the unemployment total in the U.S. to 26.5 million.
Workers and their families cannot continue to suffer while big corporations and rich executives and investors rake in bailouts. It is imperative that the House centers workers in the next COVID-19 stimulus package by including Rep. Pramila Jayapalâs proposal for a Paycheck Guarantee Act in the bill.
The Paycheck Guarantee Act would cover 100% of wages for workers earning salaries up to $100,000 for at least three months and keep workers enrolled in employer-sponsored benefits while workplaces are closed for safety reasons during the pandemic. Your U.S. representative must make sure that these provisions are included in the next relief package.

As COVID-19 continues to spread across the United States, more and more workers are losing their jobs. Recent [data]( from the U.S. Department of Labor shows that as of April 16, over 22 million workers have filed for unemployment since March 14. Thatâs 13.5% of the labor force.
Many of those 22 million workers and their families are now facing serious [challenges](. State unemployment agencies are overwhelmed with new claims, stigma and resentment against unemployed workers is likely to rise, and returning to work when the crisis is over is not guaranteed.
Itâs crystal clear that a one-time stimulus check for $1200âand some people, like [immigrants](, wonât even receive thatâwill not be enough.

Thatâs why Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal proposed the [Paycheck Guarantee Act](, legislation that would help struggling companies continue to pay workers when they are closed during the crisis. Among other provisions, the Act [would](:
- Cover 100% of wages for workers earning salaries up to $100,000 for at least three months;
- Keep workers enrolled in employer-sponsored benefits, like health insurance;
- Encourage employers to rehire recently laid-off or furloughed workers by covering payroll retroactively to the start of the COVID-19 crisis.
As Rep. Jayapal said when announcing the Paycheck Guarantee Act, âmass unemployment is a policy choice.â The U.S. doesnât have to leave workers and families behind. A better option is possible.
In order to get relief to as many workers as possible as quickly as possible, Congress must include the Paycheck Guarantee Act in the next COVID-19 relief package. It is imperative that your U.S. representative do everything they can to make sure it is part of the next bill.
