, [sign and send to your U.S. representative: Ensure the Paycheck Guarantee Act is included in the next COVID-19 relief bill](. [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( As COVID-19 continues to spread across the United States, more and more workers are losing their jobs. Recent [data]( from the U.S. Department of Labor shows that as of April 16, over 22 million workers have filed for unemployment since March 14. That’s 13.5% of the labor force. Many of those 22 million workers and their families are now facing serious [challenges](. State unemployment agencies are overwhelmed with new claims, stigma and resentment against unemployed workers is likely to rise, and returning to work when the crisis is over is not guaranteed. It’s crystal clear that a one-time stimulus check for $1200—and some people, like [immigrants](, won’t even receive that—will not be enough. [Sign and send to your U.S. rep: Workers need real, ongoing relief, not a band-aid.]( [SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION]( That’s why Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal proposed the [Paycheck Guarantee Act](, legislation that would help struggling companies continue to pay workers when they are closed during the crisis. Among other provisions, the Act [would](: - Cover 100% of wages for workers earning salaries up to $100,000 for at least three months; - Keep workers enrolled in employer-sponsored benefits, like health insurance; - Encourage employers to rehire recently laid-off or furloughed workers by covering payroll retroactively to the start of the COVID-19 crisis. As Rep. Jayapal said when announcing the Paycheck Guarantee Act, “mass unemployment is a policy choice.” The U.S. doesn’t have to leave workers and families behind. A better option is possible. In order to get relief to as many workers as possible as quickly as possible, Congress must include the Paycheck Guarantee Act in the next COVID-19 relief package. It is imperative that your U.S. representative do everything they can to make sure it is part of the next bill.
