Friend, March was an enormous month for Daily Kos, and April is proving that it was no fluke. Just look at our traffic for the year: March was our biggest month since May 2017. The last week of March was our biggest week of the year, and the first two weeks of April were our second and third biggest. We went from 10 million page views at the height of the impeachment trial to more than 15 million at the end of March! This is a crazy, stressful time, and progressives are coming to Daily Kos in huge numbers to get their news and take action to hold Trump accountable for his deadly mismanagement of the coronavirus crisis. This traffic boom isn't unique to us, as news readership is up across the country. However, even as audiences are increasing in size, news outlets are still going bust. In fact, they're going bust faster than ever before! After years of being squeezed on ad revenue by tech giants like Facebook and Google, news media now have to contend with the economic paralysis brought on by the pandemic. Simply put, businesses are shut down, so there's nothing to advertise for—ad revenue has almost completely evaporated. BuzzFeed's Craig Silverman aptly calls it a "media extinction event." Right now, Daily Kos has avoided those devastating trends because we have something that most media outlets don’t have—we have you, our readers. Community support—that is, readers and activists like you each giving a few bucks at a time—is our biggest source of income. I don't know what lies ahead for the coronavirus crisis or the economic calamity that will follow it, but I do know that Daily Kos will continue reporting the news—and giving you a way to do something about the news—for as long as we have the resources to do so. [Daily Kos is the go-to place for progressives to get news they can do something about, and never has our work been more important than it is right now. We don't have billionaire backers or big corporate sponsors like some outlets. We are an independent news and grassroots activism community, and our biggest source of income is readers like you giving $1, $5 or $10 at a time to help us make ends meet. Will you please support Daily Kos by starting a $5 monthly contribution today?]( [If you can't contribute monthly, please give $5 one time if you can. It really helps.]( Thank you Markos Moulitsas, Founder Daily Kos If you wish to donate by mail instead, please send a check to Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
