Friend, [add your name: The internet should be a public utility.]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the many ways the internet has become central to our lives and the modern economy. Americans are relying on the internet to reach out to health care providers, to create makeshift classrooms and offices, to order groceries, and even just to connect with others while practicing social distancing. But still, the internet is regulated as a private “service” instead of a public utility, which gives corporations, not the government, the ability to control our access — even during a global crisis. [Add your name: The internet should be a public utility.]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( Regulating the internet as a public utility would solve a lot of problems and it would allow the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to prohibit internet service providers from creating internet “fast lanes” and “slow lanes.” Title II of the Communications Act of 1934 already grants the FCC the authority to declare the internet a public utility and provide greater regulation to the telecommunications industry. It’s time for the FCC to exercise that authority. Information and communication are among our most important weapons in combating coronavirus. Big Telecom and Big Cable shouldn't have the power to limit our access.
