Sisters and Brothers, Shortly after he was elected, I met with President-elect Trump because I wanted to start our relationship by being crystal clear and straightforward about the needs and concerns of New York City’s residents as he gets set to take office. I told the President-elect that we are the ultimate city of immigrants, and that we will do all we can to protect our residents and to make sure families are not torn apart. I told him that the overuse and abuse of stop-and-frisk created a wedge between police and our communities, and that since we ended its overuse the city has gotten safer. And I expressed in no uncertain terms that we are not going back to that policy. I raised my concerns that repealing Dodd-Frank or cutting taxes for large corporations and the wealthiest among us would move our city backwards and risk another financial crash. It was a candid conversation with plenty of give and take. But my job is to make it clear with him from the start that these are the values New Yorkers share, and these values have never been dependent on any one person or any one office. They are a part of our identity. They always have been, and they always will be, and I need to know that you still agree: [Add your name if Donald Trump’s election has inspired you to recommit yourself to the fight for the progressive values we share.] Moving our city forward and protecting the values we share will take all of us coming together and making our voices heard. Because when we come together – in the greatest and most diverse city in the world – we are unstoppable. In solidarity, Bill de Blasio Mayor, New York City Paid for by Bill de Blasio for Mayor.
