As Sen. Warren [explains](, she was forced out of her job in 1971, years before the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was signed into law in 1978—but pregnancy discrimination still happens today in both blatant and insidious ways. Conservatives [claimed]( that because Sen. Warren’s employer didn’t record pregnancy as her reason for being fired, she couldn’t possibly have faced discrimination. That argument is wholly inaccurate and doesn’t account for the loopholes employers use to fire pregnant people—even today, 48 years later, pregnant workers [may lose their jobs]( if they sit down to rest, keep a bottle of water on hand, or request extra bathroom breaks. [This cannot continue. Combined with classism and racism, pregnancy discrimination in the workplace is especially prevalent against [low-wage workers]( and workers of color. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act is not enough.
