Friend, [sign the petition to Facebook: Remove political ads proven to be false.]( [Sign the petition]( In a move that could dangerously alter the 2020 election, Facebook has recently decided to exempt political ads from its general prohibition on false content. Soon after this policy change, Donald Trump's re-election campaign made a huge ad buy on Facebook that repeated blatant lies & conspiracy theories about Joe Biden & Ukraine. Rule #13 of Facebook's ad policy [prohibits ads]( that include "claims debunked by third-party fact checkers." Ads that are found to violate that rule are taken down accordingly. But Facebook last week decided to exempt from Rule #13 any ads coming from a "website or Page with the primary purpose of expressing the opinion or agenda of a political figure." [Sign the petition to Facebook: Political ads should be subject to the same prohibition on lies as other content on your platform. Please rescind your exception to Rule 13 immediately.]( [Sign the petition]( This change to Facebook's rules effectively gives Donald Trump (or any other political candidate, for that matter) open season to broadcast every lie and falsehood—while Facebook receives the ad revenue. Under the old rules, Facebook would have removed these ads. The third-party fact-checkers that Facebook uses when an ad is alleged to be false (Factcheck.org and Politifact) have already debunked the claims made in Trump's ads. Other media outlets have more integrity. CNN [refused to air]( an ad from Trump's campaign that repeated the same lies mentioned in the Facebook ad—because the ad was untrue. It is unacceptable that Facebook should decide it will profit by broadcasting these falsehoods. Exempting political advertisements from Rule 13 is extremely dangerous, as you effectively give politicians open season to repeat lies that your own third-party fact checkers have debunked. Please rescind this exception immediately. By signing this petition you will receive periodic updates on offers and activism opportunities from Daily Kos. You may unsubscribe at any time.
