Friend, last week we saw another progressive digital media outlet [shutter its doors](. ThinkProgress has been the independent editorial arm of the Center for American Progress since the Bush administration. Like many digital outlets, they relied on advertising to help make ends meet. However, with the meteoric rise of Google and Facebook over the past decade, those advertising dollars have dried up. ThinkProgress now joins other progressive and mainstream digital media outlets, like Buzzfeed, CNN, Huffington Post, McClatchy, Vice Media, First Look, Rewire, Out, and Gannett that have either laid off staff or shutdown completely. So far this year, [over 3,200 jobs]( have been shed from the media industry. Another 5,000 were lost from 2014-2017. [With outlets reducing staff or shutting down, it’s becoming more and more clear that Daily Kos is an essential news source. In the wake of more media layoffs this year, we need your help to continue combating right-wing outlets like Fox News, Breitbart and Sinclair Broadcasting. Please chip in $5 a month to support independent, progressive media.]( [Can't chip in monthly? Click here to chip $5 one time.]( As Trump's lies are promoted to millions every day by the Fox News-led right-wing propaganda machine, it is critical that we have robust, independent, progressive news sources. Now more than ever, working to debunk Trump lies and speak truth to power is a public service. Daily Kos is one of the biggest progressive news outlets in the country, but we’re not immune to the pressures of digital publishing. Over six years ago, Daily Kos was facing layoffs too, we learned pretty quickly that ad revenue alone couldn't support the work we do. However, instead of trimming staff or closing up shop, we turned to our grassroots community for direct, small-dollar support. With your help, we were able to stabilize our revenue and move forward stronger than ever. Now our community support makes up over one-third of our revenue, with an average donation of $9.53. We pride ourselves on being a reader-first outlet funded by small donors, as it allows us to stay independent. We don't have billionaire backers or vulture capitalist firms propping us up to push their own agenda. We have hundreds of thousands of readers like you who want us to be bold, fearless, truthful; to call out right-wing hate and hypocrisy, and to push a progressive agenda that will move our country forward. [If you want to see independent, progressive media continue into the future, click here to start a $5 recurring monthly donation to help Daily Kos keep fighting.]( [Or, if you can't chip in monthly, please click here to chip in $5 one time.]( Keep fighting, and thanks for all you do, Chris Bowers Executive Campaign Director, Daily Kos If you wish to donate by mail instead, please send a check to Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
