Combined with classism and racism, pregnancy discrimination in the workplace is especially prevalent against [low-wage workers]( and workers of color. Despite existing protections, pregnant workers still face workplace discrimination. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA), signed into law in 1978, allowed more pregnant people to continue working, but it has not done enough to close [discrimination loopholes]( that jeopardize pregnant workers’ job security. In addition to being illegally fired, pregnancy discrimination shows up in many forms, both [blatant and insidious](. In physically demanding, often low-wage roles, pregnant workers may lose their jobs if they sit down to rest, keep a bottle of water on hand, or request extra bathroom breaks. In office environments, pregnant workers may be sidelined or removed from assignments that would advance their career. [No one should be discriminated against in their workplace. Between October 2010 and September 2015, nearly [31,000]( pregnancy discrimination cases were filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and state-level fair employment practice agencies. This cannot continue. Congress must enact clear protections for pregnant workers—and the U.S. House of Representatives has a bill to do just that. In May, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) [introduced]( the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, legislation that would protect pregnant workers from discrimination and close the loopholes left open by the PDA. This is the legislation pregnant workers deserve. It needs a strong list of cosponsors committed to ending pregnancy discrimination in the U.S. for good—and your representative can help.
