Friend, imagine if Al Gore had become President… or Hillary Clinton? This is the reason why we are working so hard to elect our presidents by National Popular Vote, not the Electoral College. More than 2 million Daily Kos readers have taken action to elect presidents by the national popular vote. [We have been working on a state-by-state basis to pass the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. This is one of the longest campaigns we have ever run. Please support our ongoing work by giving $5 today.]( We don't need a constitutional amendment to pass the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. The NPVIC is an agreement among several states and the District of Columbia to award all their respective electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the overall popular vote. Once states totaling 270 electoral votes join the compact—which only requires passing state laws—then the next presidential election will be determined by the popular vote, not the Electoral College. As legislative sessions come to a close, we assess the progress we have made towards electing our Presidents by popular vote. Delaware, New Mexico, Colorado and Oregon all passed laws to join the NPVIC; bringing the total electoral votes to 196. I need to be honest, we have had some setbacks. In Nevada, NPVIC passed through the legislature, but was vetoed by the governor. And in Maine, after passing the Senate, and a strong grassroots push, the bill failed in the state House. But we are not giving up. Now it's time to begin our campaign in Virginia. This will be an active campaign in 2020, but in order for this to work, we need Democrats to control both chambers of the legislature after the 2019 elections. In order to gain control, Democrats need to win two seats in the General Assembly and one seat in the Senate -- this is doable. [We don't need anymore Donald Trumps or George Bushes. We can change how we elect our presidents. Can you give $5 so we continue our campaign to elect presidents by popular vote?]( Keep Fighting, Amanda McKay, Daily Kos If you wish to donate by mail instead, please send a check to Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
