Friend, I want to underline an important point Will made in his last email: Daily Kos isn't immune to the pressures facing publishers today. Tech giants like Google and Facebook have duopolized ad revenue that was once the lifeblood of media companies. Changes that may seem small to these megacorporations can have enormous impacts on news outlets, especially small, independent outlets like Daily Kos. For many in the media today, the situation is simply dire. We've endured thanks entirely to you, our readers. We've grown tremendously over the past seven years, even as other groups like us have shrunk and shut down. I have always been grateful to work at an outlet with such a passionate, supportive readership base. [So, if you want to support independent, progressive media, then please click here to chip in $5 now if you haven't already.]( In solidarity, Chris Bowers, Daily Kos P.S. I've included Will's email below in case you missed it. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, this is bleak: More than 2,400 media jobs have been lost this year—and it's only April. The work these people do—investigating, writing, editing, and promoting stories—is critical in the Trump era. Look no further than Attorney General William Barr's attempts to hide the Mueller report to see how important it is to have an aggressive news media working to expose lies and corruption. Daily Kos is the biggest progressive news outlet in the country, but we're under the same industry pressures that have forced thousands of media layoffs this year. As much as I hate to say it, Daily Kos is falling behind on its revenue goals for the year, and I don't know when things will turn around. [Daily Kos is an essential news source, and we depend on readers like you for nearly a third of our revenue. We don't want to end up in the same situation as others have so far this year. Please chip in $5 a month to support independent, progressive media.]( [Can't chip in monthly? Click here to chip in $5 one time.]( This isn't some fluke, this is an acceleration of a long-term trend. Business Insider reports that 5,000 media jobs were lost between 2014 and 2017. Again, there have been 2,400 layoffs this year. This isn't a problem for just one type or size of publisher, either. Digital outlets like the Huffington Post have shed jobs, and so has Gannet, the country's largest newspaper publisher. Giants like McClatchy have laid off hundreds, and so have newcomers like Buzzfeed. The list goes on and on: Vice, New York Media, the Dallas Morning News ... It's not a list that I want to see Daily Kos on. [Daily Kos is falling behind, and we can't catch up without your help. If you want to see more independent, progressive media and not less, click here to start a $5 recurring monthly donation help Daily Kos keep fighting.]( [Or, if you can't chip in monthly, please click here to chip in $5 one time.]( Thank you, Will Rockafellow President, Daily Kos If you wish to donate by mail instead, please send a check to Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
