Friend, [add your name: Thank Governor Gavin Newsom for declaring a moratorium on the death penalty in California.]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( Last week, death penalty abolitionists won a major victory when California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a moratorium on executions. His decision also withdraws the state’s lethal injection protocol, and closed the execution chamber at San Quentin State Prison. With 738 people condemned, California has the largest death row in the country. Death sentences are applied arbitrarily — district attorneys have discretion, so the decision varies from county to county. Two out of every three prisoners on death row are people of color. At least one-third have serious mental illnesses. More than half were 25 or younger when they were prosecuted. Many of them may be innocent. The death penalty is the epitome of our misguided approach to criminal justice. It has no place in a vision of justice that fully embraces the values of equality, fairness, and human dignity. [Add your name: Thank you, Governor Newsom!]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( Newsom's decision should not be taken lightly. Despite being a blue state, in 2016, California voted to not only uphold the death penalty, but to also fast track executions. Still, Newsom took a principled position, and ensured that there will be no executions in California for as long as he is in office. At least four other states are also reconsidering their approach to capital punishment. Let's show them that we'll have their back when they lead us away from cycles of trauma and violence. Our partners at Equal Justice USA will deliver the petition signatures to Governor Newsom. Please join us in thanking him by adding your name today.
