Help us create a plastic-free world for our oceans! ------------------------------------------------

Help us create a plastic-free world for our oceans! [Supermarkets must end their overuse of plastic to help save our oceans. Sign Greenpeace's petition now >>]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, A recent National Geographic cover story — Planet or Plastic? — hit me hard. Our oceans are choking on toxic plastic waste. As it slowly degrades, plastic becomes more dangerous — breaking down into smaller pieces that are eaten by birds, whales, and turtles, and other marine life. Plastic even finds their way into our food and water in the form of microplastic particles. We have a choice to make: to continue consuming single-use, throwaway plastic at current rates and destroy our oceans, or to move towards reusable, sustainable alternatives. Making that change starts where we shop every week: at our supermarkets. Our supermarkets sell countless quantities of excessive plastic waste, much of which is not recyclable: apples and bananas wrapped in plastic; plastic bottles packaged in plastic; individual muffins in plastic. We throw away this plastic in just a few minutes, yet it will last several human lifetimes. [Sign the petition right now — join us in telling supermarkets that as customers we're sick and tired of throwaway plastic that causes irreversible damage to wildlife, and we demand sustainable packaging.]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( Recycling is not the solution. The vast majority ends up in landfills and, worse, our environment, choking all manner of wildlife. Thousands of seabirds and sea turtles, seals and other marine mammals are killed each year after ingesting plastic or getting entangled in it. In fact, scientists have documented up to 700 marine species affected by ocean plastic. By targeting supermarkets, we can get to the source of the problem: plastic production. Once supermarkets demand reusable alternatives, the big brands we’ve already been putting pressure on to stop producing throwaway plastic — brands like Nestle and Coca-Cola — will have to listen. [Sign our petition to end single-use plastics at supermarkets and we’ll make sure supermarket CEOs hear from all of us!]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( I’m confident that we’re near a cultural tipping point on single-use plastic. A few years ago, no one was talking about plastic, but now almost every day brings news of a company, or a town, or even an entire country taking steps to reduce the plastic pollution that is choking our oceans and our communities. [Add your name and take action today. Help end a wasteful reliance on single-use plastics.]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( Together for a plastic-free planet, Annie Leonard Executive Director, Greenpeace USA Paid for by Greenpeace USA.
