[Voter suppression is a very serious issue that, if left unchecked, could sway upcoming elections during this critical time in our democracy. Sign Senator Cory Booker's petition to send a strong message in support of voting rights for all.]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, The right to vote is at the core of our American democracy. Voting is the heartbeat of our republic, providing, as the founders stated in the Declaration of Independence, “consent of the governed.” But across America, there are divisive forces at work, tearing at the fabric of our democracy. These forces continue to use any means to suppress the fundamental right to vote of millions of Americans, often targeting poor and minority communities. We must work together to protect the right to vote. In Georgia, the Republican candidate for governor is using his position as Secretary of State to suppress the registration of tens of thousands of voters, most of them black Americans. It’s a cynical abuse of his position of power to gain an advantage over his Democratic opponent. [Will you join me in standing up for voting rights for all Americans, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or economic background? Sign the petition.]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( In North Dakota, a lower court – with the blessing of the Supreme Court – ruled the state can demand voters produce identification before voting, a ruling effectively disenfranchising thousands of Native Americans living on reservations. In a state where the Senate election six years ago was decided by less than 3,000 votes, this restrictive voter ID law could be a deciding factor in this year’s close race. While most states restore voting rights to people convicted of felonies after they've completed their sentences, in Florida, officials want to prevent those individuals from ever voting, even after they have served their time and paid their debt to society. This is a voter suppression effort that disproportionately impacts black Americans. The Sentencing Project estimated in a 2016 report that in four states – Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia – more than one in five black Americans were disenfranchised. From the statehouse to Congress, the county clerk to the courthouse, those in positions of power are using the levers of authority to suppress voter participation – and to divide our nation. It’s time to call voter suppression what it really is: an attack on our rights as Americans. It strikes at the heart of who we are as a people and as a nation. Every generation of Americans has been called upon to meet great challenges and overcome adversity. I believe the right of every American to fully participate in our democracy is a cause for which our generation must stand and fight. We can no longer allow those in positions of power to abuse the aspirations that are enshrined in our founding documents. To remain silent now is to turn our backs on millions of Americans who are being shoved out of our democracy. [Will you stand with me in this fight to ensure every American can vote? Sign the petition.]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( Thanks for standing with me, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) Paid for by Cory Booker for Senate. Does not equal endorsement.
