Friend, on Oct. 1, 2017, a gunman attacked a large crowd attending a country music concert in Las Vegas. By attaching bump stock accessories to his rifles, he effectively converted them into machine guns. He fired more than one thousand rounds of ammunition in minutes, killing 58 people and injuring more than 700. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has asked for the public to weigh in on a proposed rule that would make clear that bump stock accessories — like those used in the Las Vegas mass shooting — are illegal. Under current federal law, automatic weapons are highly regulated but bump stocks are not — anyone can buy one. By clarifying that bump stocks and other “conversion devices” qualify as “machine guns,” the ATF can effectively ban these devices. Daily Kos is working with a wide coalition to let the ATF know that it's critical to put this rule in place – and finally regulate these dangerous firearm accessories.
