Climate activists in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, and all over the continent are gearing up to launch the REPower Afrika campaign. [Add your name today to tell the U.S. to prioritize investment in distributed and community-led renewable energy for Africa and for the rest of the world.]( [ADD YOUR NAME](   As I write this email, something extraordinary is happening across Africa, Friend: Climate activists in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, and all over the continent are gearing up to launch the REPower Afrika campaign. This campaign is all about shifting our reliance on fossil fuels and onto community-owned renewable energy. But in order to make this transition happen, we need countries like the United States to keep their promises to stop spending public money on coal, oil and gas and instead fund renewable energy — so we are asking: [Can you please add your name to the petition calling on the U.S. to stop funding fossil fuel extraction in Africa and prioritize investment in distributed and community-led renewable energy in Africa instead?]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( Right now climate activists in Africa are gearing up to launch community-owned renewable energy projects all over the continent just like this one in Uganda:       Friend — 17 out of the 20 countries most threatened by the climate crisis are in Africa. East Africa is experiencing severe rains that have caused flooding, hundreds of deaths, displacement, and extensive damage to property and infrastructure in Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi. Despite these alarming trends, the fossil fuel industry and some governments continue to expand fossil fuel infrastructure, such as the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). This project, termed a carbon bomb due to its expected emissions, threatens our people and our planet. Renewable energy holds the promise of not only improving energy access and environmental sustainability, but also driving development through the creation of green jobs. While fossil fuel projects such as EACOP may create 200-300 jobs in Uganda, renewable energy has the potential to generate an astounding 400,000 to 1.5 million jobs by 2050 in East Africa. To avert the catastrophic impacts of climate change and enhance access to clean energy, it is crucial to stop financing harmful fossil fuel projects and redirect significant investments towards decentralized renewable energy across the continent. [So please — add your name today and call on the U.S. to stop funding destructive fossil fuel projects and start funding renewable energy for those most impacted by the climate crisis.]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( Thank you for signing the petition to hold our leaders accountable and help sustain the pressure to get them to follow through on their commitments.
