This is very concerning, friend. Last month we missed our fundraising goal by $23,924. This month, with just 6 days left, we still need to raise $149,113! [Before I explain why it is critical we reach our fundraising goal, I need to ask if you can please donate $5 or more today?]( [PLEASE DONATE]( Nearly a decade ago, news outlets were on the rise and often profitable. Social media platforms, Facebook in particular, drove unprecedented amounts of traffic to news websites, leading to big advertising revenue. Unfortunately, in 2017, Facebook drastically changed their algorithm, resulting in a drastic drop in web traffic–and a resulting drastic decline in advertising revenue–for many news media organizations.. The intense interest in news during the Trump administration softened this blow for many news organizations, including Daily Kos. However, once Trump was finally and mercifully out of office, many news organizations were forced to make drastic budget cuts, including laying off staff. Some outlets were bought and sold to the highest corporate bidder, while other outlets started charging for access to their content with paywalls. Some news outlets were forced to shutdown. For a long time, Daily Kos was able to stay afloat during hard times because our grassroots fundraising efforts insulated us from the financial hardships that have plagued other news organizations. Now, we rely heavily on donations of just a few dollars at a time from our readers and activists to cover our operating expenses. Unfortunately, over the last couple months, we have seen the number of donations drop and we have missed our fundraising goals.  [That's why I am asking you to support progressive news and activism with a donation of $5 or more to Daily Kos right now.]( [PLEASE DONATE]( Thank you for all you do, Amanda McKay, Daily Kos If you wish to donate by mail instead, please send a check to Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612.
