The resulting explosion claimed six lives and injured more than 80 bystanders. Within days, police [charged](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvcm9qb2t0aTl6NC8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa) the alleged bomber, Ahlam Albashir, and more than a dozen other suspects with murder and âattempts against the unity of the state,â while acting on behalf of the separatist Kurdistan Workersâ Party (PKK) as well as affiliated Syrian-Kurdish groups. This opening salvo of an offensive that is to include the invasion of Kurdish-held areas in Syria drew objections from the United States: It was [concerned](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvdHMxb3Y2YTRoNS8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa) about the safety of US troops stationed nearby â but the US is also stuck in the conflicted position of partnering with Turkey in the NATO alliance while supporting Kurdish forces in the fight against Islamic State. But the big bombshell falling alongside these events, say analysts, is Turkeyâs about-face on Syria: Frustrated with his inability to elicit an American endorsement for his war against Kurdish nationalists, the Turkish leader is now seeking to mend relations with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad â a reversal of a decade-long policy to see the Syrian leader removed. âIf relations have improved with Egypt, the same thing may happen with Syria,â [said](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvc2U2M3MxZXkwdy8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa) Erdogan, referring to his rapprochement with leaders he previously shunned, for example, [shaking hands](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvamZiaTh1YjMzei8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa) with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi recently at the World Cup in Doha. âIn politics, there is no such thing as not speaking to each other.â These moves will likely result in the withdrawal of support for the Syrian opposition from its most trusted ally since the war broke out more than a decade ago, say insiders. Most interviewed for this article wouldnât go on the record to confirm such a move â but they admitted itâs coming. Other diplomatic moves point in that direction, too. At a meeting earlier this month with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Erdogan proposed three-sided negotiations on âdeconfliction measuresâ that would include Turkish, Russian, and Syrian officials considering security agreements and restoring Turkish-Syrian ties. âUntil recently, Turkey was concerned with who controlled Syria, and it was against Assad,â wrote [Omer Onhon](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvYjJlOXliNmVpdi8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa), a former Turkish Ambassador to Syria, in an analysis for the Saudi daily Asharq Al-Awsat. âNow, what concerns Turkey most, seems to be Syriaâs territorial integrity rather than who controls it.â The shifting alliances come amid a dire economic situation in Turkey, which is experiencing 170 percent [inflation](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvdXIxY3RtanUycS8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa), rising unemployment, and the daily devaluation of the Turkish lira. Meanwhile, public support in Turkey for invading Kurdish-held territory in Syria is high, especially following the terror attack in Istanbul. Alongside that, many Turks blame the [3.6 million Syrian refugees](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvano3NjlkZzkzNy8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa) for the nationâs problems, polls [show](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvanR3Y3RxYjF5NS8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa): For example, more than 60 percent of Turks in Istanbul â which has served as a hub for the aspiring Syrian government-in-exile for more than a decade â say the country has a refugee problem. And in 2023, Erdogan is up for re-election. âItâs all about the June elections,â a prominent Syrian opposition leader told DailyChatter. âThe days of solidarity with the displaced victims are over. Erdogan knows the street blames Syrians for Turkeyâs economic problems. And (Syrian) activists are being told by Turkish authorities to tone down their criticism of al-Assad.â That resentment of refugees has already resulted in growing support for Erdoganâs opponents. For example, Republican Peopleâs Party chairperson Kemal Kilicdaroglu had already pledged to re-establish diplomatic ties with the Assad regime years before the current administrationâs overtures. Meanwhile, Turkey will need Syrian cooperation if it wants to move forward with a plan to relocate thousands of refugees to a âsafe zoneâ 20 miles inside Syria, where Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said 75,000 houses had been constructed over the past two years to house them. A Russian-facilitated Erdogan-Assad handshake is a bitter pill for the battered Syrian opposition, which had been holding its own in its fight against the Assad government until Russia got involved militarily on the governmentâs side a few years ago. At the same time, food shipments and medical help for the remaining rebel-held enclave in northwest Syria pass through Turkish territory, as do the arms the opposition needs to stay in play. Still, losing support from Turkey means more than just the loss of a political ally or a corridor for goods. Itâs the oppositionâs loss of a home, and maybe its future. âWeâve been urging (opposition) headquarters to move out of Istanbul,â the Syrian opposition leader said. âBut itâs not like there is another country bordering Syria where weâre going to be welcome.â ~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0RoaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvb3ZrZjN4YmViYy8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2cmbGhfZW09dHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODklNDBnbWFpbC5jb21XA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa [Advertisement](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvend0dGh3cm1uNy8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa) [Advertisement](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvZ3ZvMDh4NWNnZC8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa) Reptilian Bias Scientists discovered that snakes have clitorises in a landmark [study](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvamY1dGJseTJpci8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa) that could prompt more research into the female speciesâ reproductive organ, Live Science [reported](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvdmJmMnA2NHhmYi8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa). Researcher Megan Folwell initially came across the organ after she made an incision into a female Australian death adderâs tail. But she saw that there was barely any literature confirming snake clitorises. âIt just didnât make sense to me,â she said. âI knew there had to be something going on.â Along with her team, they dissected preserved specimens from four snake families and used computer tomography scans on the reptiles. They found that at least nine snake species had a forked âhemiclitoris,â each with its own shape and size. This was the first time a clitoris was detected in snakes: Scientists have found the sensitive organ in various vertebrate species, including lizards â the snakeâs closest cousins. But the findings also underscore a disparity in the study of male and female genitalia. In the case of snakes, there are more than 200 years of data about the male speciesâ âhemipenis,â a two-pronged penis tucked under the base of the tail. Previously, researchers had speculated that female snake clitorises did not exist or they had been reduced to a stunted evolutionary remnant. But this trend is also common with other species, including humans where there are still new findings about the clitoris. According to a 2014 [study](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvdXRiajViamcway8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa), around 50 percent of all animal genitalia studies published between 1989 and 2013 focused solely on males, whereas 10 percent focused solely on females. ~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0RoaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMveDFrM2pwdmdjaC8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2cmbGhfZW09dHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODklNDBnbWFpbC5jb21XA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa [Advertisement](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvc2tjdGxhb25hdC8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa) [Advertisement](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0REaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvN3h6ZGh0MmUzMS8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPWwxNGloaGc0a2dXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa) [Unsubscribe from this list](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0RWaHR0cHM6Ly9yZWFkLmxldHRlcmhlYWQuZW1haWwvZGFpbHktY2hhdHRlci1jaGFybG90dGUtb2JzZXJ2ZXIvdW5zdWJzY3JpYmU_aWQ9QDQ1MjExMTlXA3NwY0IKY6O9IaxjMx4vqlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa) Copyright © 2022 DailyChatter, All rights reserved. 32 Atlantic Avenue, Boston, MA 02110 [Made with Letterhead [Letterhead logo]](~/AASU4wA~/RgRljqa8P0QiaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvbmVwbm83czh5c1cDc3BjQgpjo70hrGMzHi-qUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW44OUBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAFo~)
