You may have noticed the three words we place at the very top of our newsletter each day, right under our name. Those words are Independent, Non-Partisan, Fair. These words represent the principles to which we are dedicated and the values we try our best to bring to each issue of DailyChatter. Today I want to explain why we believe these standards are so important to our subscribers and to the cause of journalism in general. Independent: DailyChatter is not part of any other media company. We are not aligned with or obligated to any other news organization. We make our own decisions and follow only the editorial path we believe is best for our subscribers. We are a privately owned company with no debt or other financial obligations. Information about me and my fellow owners is freely available on our website [here](~/AASU4wA~/RgRlhJlOP0RoaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvNHluNDdoYjY4NC8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPXo3NTE3d3J3eGkmbGhfZW09dHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODklNDBnbWFpbC5jb21XA3NwY0IKY5BOFKJj2hGRzFIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa). Why is any of this important? Because there is too much media consolidation today and the decisions of many publishers are often driven more by financial considerations than by the public interest. DailyChatter, while committed to operating as profitably as we can, makes public service our highest obligation. Non-Partisan: The dictionary defines non-partisan as free of bias and not supporting or controlled by any political party or special interest group. This is the foundation of our commitment to our readers. Partisanship is one of the biggest problems with the news today. Too many media entities lean left or right and some don’t just lean, they’re all the way on one side or the other. And, of course, a lot of information that masquerades as news on social media today is created deliberately to misinform and mislead. A journalist’s sole commitment should be to the facts and to truth. Our duty is to be reporters of trustworthy information so people can make up their own minds. Because we human beings are imperfect, absolute objectivity is impossible to achieve. But what we can and must do is work as hard as possible to be accurate and honest. And that leads us to the last word in our masthead – Fair. It’s such a simple concept but what does fair really mean in the context of reporting? For us, it means a responsibility to report as full and complete an understanding as possible of whatever we are writing about; to look for the truth and not settle for surface appearances and easy explanations; to seek balance in our treatment of a subject and to avoid any predisposition toward one side or one point of view. This year is my 56th unbroken year in journalism. The changes I have seen during those decades are immense. But our standards and principles endure. We at DailyChatter are proud to uphold them and if there are times when you believe we’ve strayed, please don’t hesitate to be in touch with me directly or with our editorial staff via [Editors@dailychatter.com](~/AASU4wA~/RgRlhJlOP0RoaHR0cHM6Ly9saW5rLndoZXJlYnkudXMvYXA1dWNhMWJ3ei8_bGhfYWlkPTQ1MjExMTkmbGhfY2lkPXo3NTE3d3J3eGkmbGhfZW09dHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODklNDBnbWFpbC5jb21XA3NwY0IKY5BOFKJj2hGRzFIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODlAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABa). I assure you that you will hear back from us. With my best wishes, Phil Balboni Philip S.
