I’m frustrated by the word. First of all, it is a cliché so overused in our culture that it’s empty of meaning. Love can be a fuzzy feeling or emotion. It can mean a romantic sentiment like passing notes to a high school crush. Or it can mean sex. You can use the word love to describe how you feel about bacon or how you feel about your mother. So what does it really mean? My second frustration with the word “love” is that the people who define it in our culture are the same ones who can’t make love work. Pop stars and movie stars write our love songs and romantic comedies. But when is the last time you heard of a 50-year marriage in Hollywood? We live with a perverted and denigrated use of the word “love.” Love is treated as a commodity: something that is sought and then discarded. We are riding an agonizing carousel, spinning in an endless pursuit of love but never reaching it. We attempt to “get love” by being pretty, popular, or productive. But in the end, we’re left empty.
