You have the words of eternal life.” John 6:68 Daniel Boone wore many different hats. After the coonskin cap worn by the early frontiersmen in North America, Boone eventually wore the hats of soldier, politician, and businessman. Despite his many occupations, hunting deep in the forest for days on end was Boone’s greatest passion. Historians tell us that the Bible was one of Boone’s favorite books. He even took it with him into the woods as he hunted. On at least one occasion, Boone ended up lost in the woods for three days. He put a different spin on this adventure, famously saying, “I can’t say as ever I was lost, but I was bewildered once for three days.” One can easily imagine Boone, lost in the forest, sitting down to read these words: Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6:67–69 Peter did not always get it right. But this time, Peter hit the bull’s-eye. When it comes to our salvation, there is nowhere else to turn, no place else to go, and no one else to seek. Without Jesus, we are lost! Peter provides a powerful lesson: Living by faith is going with Jesus everywhere and always. Life pulls us in countless directions. Many possible paths look like really great options. They promise us success, power, wealth, health, or pleasure. Sometimes the best move seems to be turning to yourself and to your own abilities. But each of these turns ends up being the wrong turn in the end. Living by faith is like using a compass when you’re lost in the woods. By setting the compass on the map, you can orient yourself in the right direction. Experienced outdoorsmen know the saying, “Put red Fred in the shed.” This means that you turn and turn and turn until the red north-seeking needle lines up with the “shed” on the compass that is labeled north. If ever you are lost in life, pause for a moment and align your heart with the words of Peter’s confession: Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. John 6:68 Only one turn will bring you home: turn to Jesus. He has the words of eternal life. Jesus is the Holy One of God. He has cleared a path home for you by way of his cross and empty tomb. To whom shall you go? Which direction should you turn? Always and forever, turn to Jesus. Activity: Get outside with a map and compass and do some orienteering. Use this activity as a reminder that living by faith is all about constantly turning to Jesus. Editor’s Note: This excerpt is taken from Living by Faith: Lessons for Life by A.
